Fast Track Education for Afghan Women and Girls

Dear Friends,

2015 was a busy year for AIL’s 43 Learning Centers which served  21,972 students, 14,571 female including 10,739 adolescent girls.

In 2015, AIL Learning Centers taught 3,276 students computing skills which will be invaluable when they seek jobs in the local economy. Many of these computer students are girls or young women.  The classes are always popular and AIL frequently receives requests from individuals and centers for these classes.

Here is an inspiring story about one of those students, “This student used to live in a village with family and although the parents were not educated people, they encouraged their children to study. In their village there was a school which was not of a high standard and the teachers were not experienced. So the parents wanted their child to study in the city school even though they were poor. The student started studying in the city school in order get a good education and become a highly capable person. After school the student attended AIL’s English and computer class. After graduating from school this student went back to the village and opened a learning center and started teaching English and computing to earn a living and to help change the lives of youth in the community.”

What a difference good education makes in a life! Not only education but opportunity to learn modern marketable skills. Thank you for contributing to our work helping equip women and girls with skills they can use to make a better life for themselves and their communities.

Education is transformative. The women and girls who come to AIL Learning Centers grow and develop in knowledge, thinking skills and self- confidence. They realize they are capable and seek more opportunity to learn and grow. This story shows this transformative effect.

 “I am Zahra and I am 22 years old and one of the sewing class students. Here at the center I have learned sewing in six months and now I am working outside of the center in my own business. Before coming here, we were totally broke and disappointed since we all had no job and no income in the family whatsoever. I couldn’t do anything, there was nothing that I could do. After I heard about this center, I came and started literacy and sewing. I had never been to school before and never did sewing and it was a big challenge and opportunity for me. After a while at the literacy classes, I learned how to read and write and then I started studying on my own.  I started sewing classes and it took me a while till I learned the skills and started working seriously. Now besides working at the center, I am also working at home, sewing and I am almost the only bread winner of home!”

So far in 2015, there have been 14,363 females taking classes in AIL Learning Centers in Afghanistan and Pakistan.
