Action for Education works hand in hand with the communities it serves to provide innovative solutions that fit their educational needs. The Nest, in Athens, provides a positive and safe space for children to play and learn, while their parents can attend English or arts classes. In the coming year, AFE is set to further expand its efforts to promote refugee education and we need your help to do so!
Three years after AFE was founded, the situation has changed drastically. Thousands of people have been transferred to the Greek mainland, where the situation remains dire. People who have completed their asylum process, regardless of the outcome, remain stranded in cities. Many live in precarious or unsafe conditions and struggle to access to the most basic services and support. Only 10% of the children living on the mainland have access to education and 0,3% in the island camps.
Action for Education's programmes address these challenges through a successful model, which sees us work shoulder to shoulder with the communities we serve. We are asking for your support to continue to fight policies that undermine the basic right to education by providing bold, innovative solutions and meeting the needs of refugee communities as they arise.
In the coming year, AFE is set to further expand its efforts to promote refugee education. On the Canary Islands, we are launching Ojala!, an app which allows users to learn Spanish from a number of languages spoken in West Africa. We are also launching Certified! an education centre for girls and women in Athens. Here, we will offer language classes that provide an internationally recognised certificate, as well as a number of side activities such as sports and psychosocial support.
