Summary

The situation in Ukraine is critical. Caring for a terminally ill loved one during a war is as hard as it gets. Hospices of Hope Ukraine is supporting the first two charitable services for adults in Ukraine - one in Kyiv and one in Ivano-Frankvisk. We want to sustain and expand these two mobile teams and ensure that 300 more patients can receive good quality care in 2027. We will also train 250 doctors, nurses, social workers, physiotherapists and chaplains in multi-disciplinary palliative care.

Challenge

We set up the two hospice services, one in Kyiv, one in Ivano-Frankivsk, in 2025 to offer free of charge multi-disciplinary palliative care to patients and families affected by life-limiting illnesses. The demand is huge and we want to sustain the existing services and expand the teams in order to help more patients as well as train more health care professionals. Many patients, including veterans who need palliative care currently suffer unnecessary pain and their family members suffer trauma.

Solution

It will help to bring professional palliative care, dignity and compassion to 1,200 patients in 2027 (300 more patients than last year) and support for their relatives. Hospices of Hope's experience in this domain over the past 35 years will help to influence the development of palliative care in Ukraine by working with the government and other authorities to make more resources and training available. We have already had some success in this area and want to build on it during the coming year.

Long-Term Impact

The model of care that we have set up can be replicated in other parts of the country, bringing access to palliative care services to many more patients and families. The training that we provide to doctors, nurses and other health care professionals will impact the care of these patients in a positive way and ensure that palliative care is properly understood. Currently, services provided by the State do not focus on quality of life, which is the true hallmark of hospice care.
