How Clean Water Makes a Lasting Change

By Chris Coats | Executive Director

From Pond to Purity: The Van Family Story

In 2025, life changed for Mr. Van and his family in Cham Bak Village. For years, their daily routine was dictated by a lack of clean water—a common struggle in the Prasat Bakong District of Siem Reap. His family's history is now divided into two distinct eras: Before the Water Filter and After.

The Problem: Unsafe Sources and High Costs

Before the project, the family’s options for water were limited and risky. They relied on:

  • Natural Sources: Collecting rainwater or hauling water from local ponds.

  • Unreliable Methods: Using an outdated filter that didn't truly purify the water. They were not sure if the water was safe, and they did not have a proper method to filter or purify it, which raised concerns about potential health risks from contaminants present in the water sources they relied on.

  • Purchased Water: Buying water when they could afford it, which put a strain on their small income.

The result was a constant cycle of illness. Stomach infections were frequent, forcing the family to spend their limited savings on doctors and medicine rather than basic needs.

The Solution: Training and Technology

Trailblazer stepped in with a two-part solution funded by two caring and generous donors:

  1. Hygiene Training: The family learned the mechanics of sanitation and how to prevent the spread of germs. Mr. Van attended the training sessions, learning the invisible mechanics of hygiene—how germs move, how disease settles, and how to stop both. The change arrived not just as a gift, but as knowledge.

  2. The Bio-Sand Filter: A concrete filtration system that uses layers of sand and gravel to remove bacteria and physical contaminants from raw water.

The Impact: Health and Savings

Since implementing the filter and the new hygiene practices, the Van family has seen a direct improvement in their quality of life.

  • Better Health: Water-borne illnesses have dropped significantly, providing the family with more energy and less worry.

  • Financial Relief: By eliminating the need to buy water and reducing medical expenses, the family can keep more of what they earn. A fragile income drained by the constant need for medicine is reduced.

  • Confidence: They no longer have to guess if their water is safe; they have a reliable system right at home. Now, there is no hesitation. Mr. Van knows the science behind the sand. He knows his family is safe.

The Bottom Line: For Mr. Van, the project was a practical turning point he no longer has to worry about the most basic human need. He expressed deep gratitude to the Trailblazer Foundation and the donors for providing the tools and knowledge his family needed to stay healthy.

The support Mr. Van received turned a technical project into a human victory. This change wasn't an accident of fate; it was a bridge built by the generosity of donors.

"We are no longer just surviving the water," the family’s smiles seem to say. "Now, we are thriving because of it."

You too can be a catalyst for change by giving the gift of clean water. Please donate today and help another family thrive. Thank you.
