What factors will help ensure that the lynx one day makes a permanent return to Bulgaria? There are many, but we at WWF Bulgaria are convinced that improved ecological connectivity is one of them.
A few weeks ago, we organized an event to plant forest fruit saplings in the Berkovitsa area in Bulgaria. The initiative brought together dozens of volunteers and various institutions with a common goal: to improve the food supply for wildlife, promote habitat connectivity, and support the sustainable restoration of forest ecosystems.
The initiative was part of an international project, which aims to protect and restore green corridors for large carnivores in the Balkan, the Carpathians, and the Dinaric Alps, while also taking climate change into account.
Why do we plant fruit-bearing trees?
Forests are not only a home but also a primary source of food for many wild animals. As a result of human activity and climate change, the abundance of natural food resources has decreased. And yes, the lynx does not feed on fruits, but planting fruit-bearing tree species is an effective way to maintain balance and help preserve green corridors.
During the event, a variety of native species were planted: edible chestnut, apple, wild cherry, pear, plum. These trees provide fruit and shelter for various animal species, from birds to large mammals, thereby contributing to greater biodiversity and improved ecological connectivity.
What are green corridors, and why are they important?
Green corridors are connected natural areas that allow animals to move safely between different habitats—to search for food, mates, and new territories. Without them, many species remain isolated, which increases the risk of population decline.
Through various initiatives, WWF Bulgaria is working to restore this very connectivity in nature—a key factor for its long-term health. And restored connectivity means bigger chance for the lynx to return to its home in the lush Bulgarian forests.
