The ‘Feed A Family Outreach Program’ (Adopt A Family Project) is aimed at providing essentials to vulnerable families in Gataka, a sub urban slum. The project was initially conceptualized to support families that were heavily affected by the Covid 19 pandemic. We continue to aid the vulnerable families by providing basic needs, through well-wishers and doners, such as food, health care, clothing etc. We are currently actively supporting 100 families. We strive to make food donations every fortnight, but this is only possible with regular donations.
On major days and holidays, we visit the vulnerable families alongside our well-wishers to share a meal cooked on site and interact with them. An example was the International Day of Older Persons where we gathered together with elderly people, cooked for them and donated care packs specified for their needs. Another occasion was Christmas where we threw an early party for the locals to share in the Christmas spirit.
We earlier this year went a step further to supporting various children’s homes in partnership with the Red Cross Club of KCA University. Together we have been running fundraisers for dry foodstuff, clothes, donations and pads with proceeds going to children’s homes.
Recently, we have been working closely with community social workers who aid elderly persons. We realized a major challenge faced by the elderly, apart from food, is adult diapers. Most elderly persons need about 2-3 diapers per day, which is about Ksh 450, a steep price for the vulnerable elderly persons. They are hence forced to use pieces of clothes which can rather be unhygienic.
Woman’s Hope recently partnered with a local company, VI Organics Kenya who promised to support our initiative to support the old and sick. They have been donating adult diapers for the elderly, which makes it easier for the caregivers to take care of them. More well-wishers have been coming on board to contributing food items to ensure the old and sick do not sleep hungry. We appreciate the continued support.
