People across Southeast Asia are on the front line of the coronavirus pandemic. Communities hampered by under-resourced healthcare systems, poor infrastructure and insecure livelihoods are striving to prevent the spread of this disease and protect lives. Thousands of people living in border regions are faced with the risks posed by widespread migratory working combined with a lack of access to health facilities. Health Poverty Action is working in these communities to safeguard lives.
Throughout Southeast Asia, coronavirus (COVID-19) continues to spread despite concerted efforts to prevent transmission. In the remote border communities of Cambodia, Laos, Myanmar and Vietnam, the risks posed by returning migrant workers are compounded by a lack of access to medical treatment and material resources. Health workers who are able to reach these communities are often unable to secure protective equipment, medical supplies and transportation for patients.
We will support local health workers in Cambodia, Laos, Myanmar and Vietnam to meet the urgent health needs of these communities and help people to stay safe during this pandemic. We will conduct testing, provide essential medical supplies and undertake outreach visits to rural communities; sharing vital preventative messages and ensuring people can access appropriate treatment for COVID-19 and, crucially, for other ailments.
Local people will be supported to maintain good health and prevent the spread of COVID-19 within and beyond their communities. We will test people at borders and within the communities, raise awareness through community meetings and public information messages, and equip local healthcare workers. We will also help people to access medical treatment and strengthen links between healthcare facilities and rural communities. Giving this support now will help to protect lives and long-term health.
