Provide Books to 30,000 Children in Afghanistan

Young girls receiving the books, Kapisa province
Young girls receiving the books, Kapisa province

Dear all,

We appreciate your generous support which enabled us to bring joy to these beautiful children in Afghanistan.

We are excited to share with you all our progress report and let you know what we did during the last quarter.

#Project Summary:

This project targets the most vulnerable, marginalized and underprivileged children in Afghanistan who are affected by war and poverty, and are deprived of reading materials with proper contents in their mother tongue. The project will publish 30,000 copies of 5 storybooks in three languages (Farsi-Dari, Pashto and Uzbeki languages; 15 books in total) and make them available for children in all 34 provinces of Afghanistan through the network ABLE libraries. With the donations we have received so far, we have published a beautiful children storybook called Man wa Nihal [Me and the Plant] in three languages mentioned above. The book in each language was printed 2000 copies (6000 copies in total). During this quarter, our attempt was to begin the distribution process. So far, 400 copies of the storybooks have been distributed in the two provinces of Afghanistan. We will continue the distribution of the books and make sure that they also reach the hands of children residing in the remotest part of Afghanistan.

# What is the Storybook About?

The storybook is titled Man Wa Nihal [Me and the Plant] and is written by one of the well-known children’s authors, Parween Pajwak. The main character of the story is a 6-year-old girl who lives with her parents in a village in Afghanistan. She does not have many friends and wishes to find someone to play with. One day, a plant in her garden responds to her and becomes her friend. Through this new friend, she learns a lot about nature and its importance in human life. As time passes by, she learns to respect and protect the environment.

#Distribution of 400 Copies of the Storybooks

ABLE team conducted field visits in two provinces (Panjshir and Kapisa) and distributed the printed story book to children residing in various villages through a door-to-door campaign. ABLE initiated a door-to-door campaign during the COVID-19 lockdown to ensure that despite the schools and other educational institutions remain closed, the children have access to the supplementary reading materials. All children receiving the storybooks were very excited and happy.

#Panjshir Province

ABLE team identified seven locations for the book distribution in Panjshir province. Most of these areas are in the remote districts of Panjshir where the children do not have access to the proper reading materials. The districts covered by the ABLE field team are Onabe, Rukha, Khing, Abshar, Darra and Bazarak. A total of 150 copies of the books were distributed to children residing in these districts.

#Kapisa Province

Many families residing in Kapisa province are poor and the school children do not have access to any public or private libraries. To fill this gap, ABLE has established seven community and school libraries in different districts, such as Mahmood Raqi, Tagab, Kohistan, Najrab, etc. of this province. During the last quarter, ABLE team managed to distribute a total of 250 copies of the Man wa Nihal storybooks, along with the other ABLE publications, to the children through the ABLE libraries located in the province.
