"La Aceleradora" is the initiative to ensure that all children with childhood cancer can exercise as a non-pharmacological therapy and thus positively influence their cure and quality of life. Hand in hand with administration and La Paz hospital, we are going to accelerate the cure of childhood cancer through physical exercise. And how? 1. Creating a Physical Exercise Research Unit. 2. Developing a technological application for hospitals. 3. Investigating, improving evidence through big data
In 2018 we launched a research grant to demonstrate the effects of exercise on the immune system of children with cancer. The project was directed by Dr. Alejandro Lucia. It concluded that exercise performed by children with cancer is beneficial for their immune system: Reduces hospitalization days by 17%. Increases the possibility of survival of patients. Attenuates the side effects of chemo and has a cardioprotective effect. Increases the self-esteem and quality of life of children.
The pilot project will take place at La Paz University Hospital where the Foundation, in collaboration with its project partners and with the participation of the hospital's medical and health professionals, designs the service and builds its first Pediatric Oncology Gymnasium, which will also be a place to do science, measure and systematically analyze the impact of physical exercise on the healing of children. This service will also be available to all of the hospital's medical specialities
The vision is that all the hospitals in Spain that treat children with cancer have implemented the service through its digital dimension, the tool, and that we have ensured physical units in at least the main oncology reference hospitals in the territory. Objectives: YEAR 1 1st Hospital Unit (La Paz) V0 Digital tool Y. 2 V1 Digital tool Tool implemented in +2 h. Y. 3 V2 Digital tool Tool implemented in +4 h. 2nd h. unit Y. 4 Tool implemented in +4 h.
