In a small village in Afghanistan, Fatima* held her pregnant daughter’s hand tightly as they traveled from one hospital to another, desperately seeking help. Her daughter had been in labor for many painful hours, but both hospitals refused to admit her because of overcrowding, lack of resources, and the worsening humanitarian crisis. Fear and exhaustion filled the family’s hearts as the young mother’s condition became critical.
With nowhere else to turn, they arrived at Shaheed Abdulrazaq Clinic — a health facility supported by Action for Development. Unlike the other facilities, the staff welcomed them with compassion and urgency. The midwife on duty immediately assessed the mother, reassured the frightened family, and stayed by her side throughout the difficult delivery.
A few hours later, the cries of a healthy baby girl filled the room.
Today, both mother and child are safe and healthy. Fatima cannot hold back her gratitude when speaking about the midwife who saved her daughter’s life.
“I thought I would lose my child,” she says. “But the midwife treated us with kindness and dignity. She cared for my daughter like family. Because of this clinic, my granddaughter is alive.”
Across Afghanistan, thousands of women still face dangerous barriers to accessing maternal healthcare. Long distances, poverty, insecurity, and collapsing health systems mean many mothers are forced to give birth without skilled assistance — putting both their lives and their babies at risk.
In this critical situation, Action for Development continues to provide lifesaving maternal and newborn care through Shaheed Abdulrazaq Clinic, including delivery and home-based health services for vulnerable families who otherwise would have no access to care.
Every safe delivery is a reminder that timely healthcare can mean the difference between life and death.
Your support can help ensure that more mothers like Fatima’s daughter receive the care they desperately need. By donating, you are helping provide skilled midwives, essential medicines, safe deliveries, and hope for families across Afghanistan.
Because every mother deserves the chance to survive childbirth — and every child deserves the chance to live.
