Since 2016, HLFPPT is helping poor couples in Uttar Pradesh, (UP-India) to avail easy access to Family Planning Methods through our Network of MerryGold Hospitals. These Hospitals are well equipped with trained and qualified doctors, Counsellors and Merry Tarang Workers (MTWs), also known as Front line health worker (FLHW). These MTWs are well versed with the local community, having detailed information about the poor families, who need family planning methods.

This report will bring a smile to your face, as your continuous contributions for the project we are having over GlobalGiving to help poor couples who can’t afford & access the family planning services. Your support has helped us in making changes towards the areas of intervention.

Namaste, my name is Babita Devi (name changed), 32 years of age residing at Sarne Dadwapar, Dist- Chandauli (UP) with my husband and four children, two girls and two boys. I was initially not sure about the family planning methods like- insertion of the intrauterine contraceptive device (IUCD) for spacing between two child-births, condoms, Pills, etc.

After having my third childbirth, we both planned not to have any more babies both for financial and health reasons apart from taking proper care of the existing ones. Thus we went to a local clinic for the same and had a counseling session with the Staff Nurse therein. Nurse didi, after giving us unsatisfactory answers took us to the doctor to understand the procedure of insertion of IUCD. Thereafter we got the insertion done as recommended by the doctor.

This turned out to be a really bad decision for us as the IUCD was not of good quality and was rejected by my body. We were neither informed about the complications nor given any correct medical advice by the doctor. Because of the failure of IUCD, I conceive for the fourth time. It impacted us physically, mentally and financially.

Since I conceived, we thought of continuing with the pregnancy. For the delivery, a friend suggested to visit MerryGold Mughalsarai Hospital. I gave birth to a healthy baby boy. Furthermore, the Merry Gold doctors helped me to understand the various available options which would suit me. Finally, we were happy with our new-born baby.

One day, my neighbor came to me & asked to accompany her to a Community Health Meeting, where Merry Tarang Workers (MTWs) provide health-related information. I attended the meeting with her. At the venue, I met Deep Mala didi (an MTW), who not only informed me regarding various family planning methods but also helped me to overcome my phobia of contraceptive methods for family planning. Since I already had four children, she advocated me to go for permanent sterilization. The very same day, I discussed the options with my husband, if we should go for permanent sterilization. He was also not sure if this procedure would be successful or not.

Next day, we visited MerryGold Mugalsarai Hospital, where Deep Mala didi took me to the doctor. The doctor explained the procedure in a simple manner which was easily understandable for me and my husband. We were convinced to go for permanent sterilization. My husband was willing for the surgery as this was a permanent solution. The surgery went successful and we both are now happy with our decision.

A Success story of Minilap Sterilization

Usha's Story

Dear Donors

We would like to thank you for your kind support. We appreciate your continuous contributions for the Poor couples who can’t afford & access the family planning services. Your support has started making changes in the areas of our intervention. In this report we would like to share the story of Usha in her voice.

“I am Usha, am 35 years old, a resident of Mohalla Nakkhaas, Jaunpur, Uttar Pradesh. After having 3 healthy children in life, I have decided to take permanent family planning product. In my 10 Years of Marriage, I had listened a lot of stories about the success and failures of the contraceptives. On listening such stories, I wanted assurity for the permanent family planning method considering my affordability. I had no idea about the solution. I knew that some kind of community meetings happens every month in the village related to the health problems. I had never attended that but this time I decided to attend it to seek solution for my FP problem. In the meeting, I had met Merry Tarang worker Bindu Nishad, she guided me to MGHN Hospital Merrygold Laxmi Health Care, Jaunpur. The doctor suggested Minilap Sterilization for me. In Novemeber 2018, I got the minilap sterilization done in the hospital. The staff of the hospital was very nice. The doctor provided proper counseling for the Sterilization and had asked me for the follow-up consultation also.

In last 6 months, I got the regular counseling for the contraceptive. Even when I forgot about my appointment, Bindu kept reminding me about the same. She also guided me for after surgery procedures. I got minilap sterilization with counseling and follow ups. And that’s how my case of family planning was a successful one.

Right Choice of Contraceptives

Dear Donor,

We would like to thank our global giving donors for providing continuous support our Project “Poor Couples to Access Family Planning”. Your kind contributions are giving them chance to understand more about Sexual and Reproductive Health.

In this report, we would like to share the story of Sita, a 28 year old woman with multiple sclerosis who requested a contraceptive method with a lower failure rate as she already had 4 kids due to the failure of condom usage.

Sita and Rakesh got married at very early age. She was pregnant with her first child when she was 21. Both husband and wife happily welcomed the blessing in their life. They had decided to have two children only for their family. But Sita got pregnant with the fourth kid after 5 years. Rakesh and Sita were concerned because of failure rate of their contraceptives. Rakesh is the sole bread earner in the family. Big size of the family was limiting the resources for survival. They had never consulted a doctor because of the cost and distance. In 2018, Our Merrytarang worker who started covering their area Saidpur also, became the helping hand for the family. She showed them the path and referred them to a nearby facility that will not charge anything and provide them right choice of family planning method. After discussion about potential risks and side effects, an IUD was inserted. Both of them are very much happy that she had decided to adopt this method.

This kind of facilities has been possible because of your kindness. It would be very hard for us to reach and serve the underprivileged area without your support. But there are still many untouched area in India especially in Uttar Pradesh where community needs the guidance at right time and for making right choices in their life. To serve in every hard to reach area, we would require your support.
