Clean Water, brighter futures for 113 Children

Reporting period: Twelve-month project progress report (January–December 2026) 

Executive summary 

Access to clean and safe drinking water is a fundamental human right, yet for many vulnerable children in the Kasana Community, it remains a daily challenge. 

At Bright Futures Preparatory Nursery and Primary School, the ongoing struggle for reliable access to safe water puts children at risk of preventable illnesses, poor hygiene, decreased focus in class, and higher absenteeism rates. For adolescent girls, the lack of adequate water access complicates menstrual hygiene management, often resulting in missed school days and disrupted education. 

In response to this pressing need, Mafabi Apostolic Ministries International (MAMI) initiated the Clean Water, Brighter Futures for 113 Vulnerable Children project through the GlobalGiving platform. This project aims to establish a safe and sustainable water supply while promoting hygiene and sanitation practices that support children's health and educational success. 

This report offers an update on fundraising efforts, project implementation, achievements, lessons learned, and the ongoing need for investment in this transformative initiative. 

Background 

Clean water is vital for children's survival, health, dignity, and learning. Without access to safe drinking water, children face heightened risks of waterborne diseases, dehydration, poor sanitation, and decreased school attendance. These issues are particularly acute for girls, whose education is frequently interrupted due to insufficient facilities for managing menstrual hygiene.

Bright Futures Preparatory Nursery and Primary School is dedicated to supporting children from some of the most vulnerable households, including those led by single mothers, elderly grandparents, and even children themselves.

By providing safe drinking water at school, we can significantly enhance the health of these children, their ability to learn, grow, and reach their full potential.

Project goal

Our mission is to raise USD 1,720 to: 

• Ensure access to safe and clean drinking water. 

• Encourage proper hygiene and sanitation practices. 

• Decrease the incidence of waterborne diseases among students. 

• Enhance menstrual hygiene management for girls. 

• Boost school attendance and retention rates. 

• Improve the overall health, wellbeing, and academic performance of children. 

• Foster a healthier and safer school environment. 

Fundraising progress

We kicked off this project on the GlobalGiving platform with a goal of raising USD 1,720. 

Current status 

• Project target: USD 1,720

While the financial response has been modest so far, we are truly thankful to every donor whose kindness has helped support this vital cause. As the saying goes, "A journey of a thousand miles begins with a single step." Every contribution, no matter how small, brings us closer to ensuring that vulnerable children can enjoy the dignity and security of safe drinking water.

Project implementation 

Due to the limited funds received during this reporting period, we have not been able to implement the planned water infrastructure. To ensure we use donor contributions responsibly, the USD 2 we received was directed towards school-based hygiene and water awareness activities. These funds helped create educational materials and organize sensitization sessions for students, teachers, and support staff, focusing on:

• The significance of drinking safe and clean water.

• Good hygiene and sanitation practices.

• Proper handling and storage of drinking water.

• Prevention of waterborne diseases.

• Personal hygiene and hand washing practices.

• A shared commitment to maintaining a healthy school environment.

These activities not only bolstered knowledge but also encouraged healthier habits, all while gearing up the school community for future project rollouts.

Impact achieved

Despite facing resource constraints, the project made a real difference. The awareness sessions:

• Enhanced learners' understanding of safe water practices.

• Boosted awareness around hygiene and sanitation.

• Promoted proper hand washing and water handling techniques.

• Deepened understanding of disease prevention.

• Fostered healthier behaviors among students and staff alike.

Most importantly, the project cultivated a culture of health, cleanliness, and shared responsibility within the school community.

Challenges

The biggest hurdle we face is insufficient funding. With just USD 2 raised against a target of USD 1,720, many planned activities are still on hold, including: Installing safe water systems; acquiring water storage tanks; securing water purification equipment;  building hand washing facilities; upgrading sanitation infrastructure; expanding menstrual hygiene support facilities; establishing long-term maintenance systems for sustainable water access.

Without these crucial investments, vulnerable children continue to encounter preventable health risks that hinder their education and overall well-being.

Why this project matters

Every child deserves the basic dignity of having access to clean water. Safe water leads to: Fewer illnesses; better hygiene; increased school attendance; improved focus in class; enhanced academic performance; greater dignity for girls managing menstruation; a healthier school environment; a brighter future for every child. Investing in safe water, means investing in education, health, and future opportunities of our children especially from needy families.

Conclusion

This reporting period has highlighted that even the tiniest contribution can spark meaningful change. While we've only raised USD 2 so far, those funds have allowed us to educate children and the broader school community about safe water, hygiene, and disease prevention laying a crucial foundation for future progress.
