Conservation remains a critical pillar in our 3 focus areas as it allows us to ensure that we are mitigating human-wildlife conflict by empowering the communities living alongside the national park to co-exist alongside wildlife while also protecting the animal population in the national park.
Our conservation partners BHAPU and CWF in Kariba and Hwange continue to actively protect our national park through monthly patrols and carrying arrests and confiscations. Over 57,000 hours of patrols were carried out in 2022 and 47 arrests were made.
We will be supplying 20 additional lion bomas in the Mola and Hwange area to assist the community to keep their livestock safe from predators. Additionally, we have collared some lions in the Bumi Hills area which often roams into the Mola community. This collaring of lions is enabling us to better track the movement of lions in and out of the community and nation park and will provide much-needed assistance to our lion guardians on the ground who warn the community when they are lions in the area.
We are positive that the increased focus and resources for our conservation projects will go a long way towards achieving long-term conservation in our national parks.
