Summary

The CasaSito literacy classes for adults provide a comprehensive teaching plan, through a practical methodology for adults over 15 with cultural relevance to family members of the CasaSito Association scholars. The main objective is for them to learn to read, write, and perform basic mathematical operations. But it is also an empowerment program to raise their self-esteem and allow them to be independent and make informed decisions.

Challenge

In Guatemala, using a fingerprint remains a relatively common way to sign formal documents. The country has high rates of illiteracy, especially amongst people over 15 years of age who live in rural areas. This situation limits their ability to advance, understand their rights, and actively participate in society. CasaSito's literacy courses are offered in Alta Verapaz, a region with the second highest illiteracy rates (29.37%).

Solution

In 2023, CasaSito offered a pilot primary education project for adults in collaboration with CONALFA, the national literacy committee. 5 mothers of our scholars participated with great results. We expanded the program in 2024. In 2025, your donation will enable us to continue offering our successful Level 1 and Level 2 courses while introducing a certified level 3 course. Mothers attending the courses have expressed their wish to continue learning.

Long-Term Impact

Sixteen adults will advance their literacy and mathematical skills and will receive certificates upon completion of their courses. Education brings greater job opportunities, improved family finances and a better understanding of their civil rights. It is also a tool for their personal development. This empowerment allows them to be more independent and enables them to have more choice and control over their own lives.
