Porridge is the passport to success!

By Ruby Glasspool | Operations Manager

Maria* is 9 years old and has a 7 year old brother. Every day they walk 5km to the Murakoaza School. When she found out she was going to get a bowl of porridge every day, she was so happy!

"This really makes us want to come to school and work hard. It is very important for us because this help us to make the walk back home. Our tummies ache less in the afternoon and we could wait until the evening meal, which generally comes at 5pm."

Not only has the project been successful at feeding the children, giving them more energy for the long walk and for their learning, in Maria's case they have been able to help her mother find employment and a place to live. Their situation was so bad that when it rained, they had to stuff their clothes into a bucket in the corner to stop them getting drenched.

Now, Maria is doing much better and learning how to read and write, proudly composing a letter about her experiences and thanks to those that support her.

Milestones: As well as continuing the vital feeding programme at the school, the project has now managed to get passports and registration for every single child in the school. This is a huge achievement and will mean greater opportunities and freedoms for the children growing up, and they are a requirement in order to receive basic services in Burundi. This step will help the children to be able to access more support and is a milestone the staff there are rightly very proud of!
