Success against the odds for teen mums!

By Ezekiel Kassanga | Project Leader

Fallacy reputed, teen mothers completed Form IV after being out of school for years!

Parent students enrolled at Tumaini School have disapproved the widely maintained assumption, claims, and fear that adolescent mothers cannot maintain good morals after returning to school and maintaining a commitment to their studies. Through the second chance created and offered by Tumaini School, the girls have demonstrated a high level of determination and this November have bravely done their national examinations with great hope of scoring well. Surprisingly, Joyce, Dorcas, Tereza, and Caroline have done science subjects. The school celebrates her six parent students who have done form four examinations that ended on the 24th of this November and mark a great success in enabling young mothers who were out of school for years to complete basic education and acquire basic education qualifications. Apart from allowing them to continue with further studies and training, such qualifications are expected to increase young mother's ability to earn a living in a rapidly developing Tanzanian society.

The provision of stigma-free opportunities with a supportive learning environment and other essential supports, including psychological care guarantees effective learning for young mothers. We are confident to affirm that parent students have the capacity and commitment to schooling and performing better in their studies despite undertaking parenting roles, and being haunted by stigma and trauma.

We have about fifty young mothers on the waiting list who are eager to join the school in January 2024. To enroll them, the school needs essential requirements such as food for hostellers, mattresses, teaching and learning materials, teachers’ allowances, etc.  Your support will enable the school to serve more young mothers in 2024 and beyond.

With gratitude

Ezekiel
