Project: A Place to Call Home: Acquiring Land and Building

1. EXECUTIVE SUMMARY

Eastlander Childcare Organization Uganda (ECCOU) is working to establish a safe and permanent home for vulnerable children and youth who face poverty, family instability, inadequate housing, and limited access to essential services.

Our vision is to acquire land and develop a safe, child-friendly facility where vulnerable children can receive care, education support, meals, healthcare, counseling, protection, mentorship, and opportunities to develop life skills.

Although we have not yet secured sufficient funding to acquire the land, ECCOU has not stopped responding to the needs of children and youth in our community.

Through support from local churches, individuals, friends, and well-wishers, we have been able to provide limited educational assistance, including scholastic materials and tuition support for some children.

These contributions have demonstrated the strength of community support, but they have also highlighted the urgent need for a more sustainable solution.

Our greatest challenge remains raising the funds required to acquire suitable land and begin construction of the home.

2. THE PROBLEM WE ARE TRYING TO SOLVE

Many vulnerable children and young people in our community grow up in difficult circumstances where families struggle to meet even the most basic needs.

Some children live with relatives or caregivers who are themselves struggling with poverty. Others face inadequate housing, food insecurity, interrupted education, limited healthcare, and a lack of safe spaces where they can receive consistent support.

For these children, providing school materials or paying tuition for one term is important but it does not address the wider challenges they face.

ECCOU therefore believes that a safe and permanent home and support centre can provide a stronger foundation for long-term care and development.

3. WHAT WE HAVE ACHIEVED SO FAR

While the land and construction component of this project remains unfunded, local supporters have enabled ECCOU to continue helping children and youth.

Support from local churches, individuals, friends, and well-wishers has enabled us to:

Provide scholastic materials to vulnerable children and youth.

Support selected children with tuition.

Respond to urgent educational needs.

Work with families and communities to identify vulnerable children.

Continue community outreach and child-support activities.

Maintain the vision of establishing a permanent home despite limited resources.

These achievements may appear small compared with the size of the challenge, but for an individual child, receiving a school bag, books, shoes, or tuition assistance can make an enormous difference.

4. THE UNMET NEED

Despite these efforts, ECCOU has still not been able to raise sufficient funds to secure land for the proposed home.

This remains our most significant gap.

Without land:

Construction cannot begin.

Vulnerable children cannot have a permanent home and support centre.

We remain dependent on temporary arrangements and limited community resources.

Our ability to expand services remains restricted.

More children who need support may continue going without it.

The challenge is not a lack of commitment.

The challenge is access to the financial resources required to turn the vision into a permanent reality.

5. WHY ACQUIRING LAND IS SO IMPORTANT

Land is the foundation of this project.

Once suitable land is secured, ECCOU will have a permanent foundation from which to develop a safe and sustainable environment for vulnerable children.

The planned development will provide space for:

Safe Accommodation

A secure and child-friendly environment for children who require residential support.

Education Support

A place where children can receive tutoring, mentoring, educational materials, and guidance.

Food and Nutrition

Space to provide regular meals and develop sustainable food-production initiatives.

Health and Wellbeing

Support for basic healthcare, health education, referrals, counseling, and psychosocial wellbeing.

Skills Development

Space for vocational training, life-skills development, entrepreneurship, and youth empowerment.

Child Protection

A safe environment where vulnerable children can receive care, protection, supervision, and support.

6. OUR LONG-TERM VISION

ECCOU envisions developing a Child and Youth Care and Development Centre that brings several essential services together.

Rather than simply providing temporary assistance, the centre will help children and youth build a pathway toward independence.

The long-term vision includes:

üSafe accommodation

üClassrooms and learning spaces

üVocational training facilities

üDining and kitchen facilities

üHealth and counseling services

üRecreation and play areas

üWater and sanitation facilities

üAgricultural and income-generating activities

üOffices and community meeting spaces

üThe facility will be developed progressively as funding becomes available.

7. CHALLENGES WE CURRENTLY FACE

7.1 Limited Funding

Our greatest challenge is the lack of sufficient funding for land acquisition.

Local churches and community members have supported us where they can, but their resources are limited.

7.2 Growing Number of Children in Need

The number of children and youth requiring educational, food, healthcare, and protection support continues to exceed the resources available to us.

7.3 Rising Costs

The cost of land, construction materials, transportation, food, education, and healthcare continues to place additional pressure on our programs.

7.4 Limited Infrastructure

Without a permanent facility, ECCOU cannot provide the full range of services envisioned for vulnerable children and youth.

8. THE ROLE OF OUR LOCAL COMMUNITY

We are deeply grateful to the churches, individuals, friends, parents, community members, and well-wishers who have stood with ECCOU.

Their support has taught us an important lesson:

A community can begin changing children's lives even before it has all the resources it needs.

However, community contributions alone cannot finance the acquisition of land and construction of a permanent home.

We now need to build stronger partnerships beyond our immediate community.

9. OUR APPEAL TO DONORS AND PARTNERS

We are appealing to:

INDIVIDUAL DONORS

Your contribution can help us move one step closer to securing land.

CHURCHES

We invite churches and faith communities to partner with ECCOU through donations, fundraising campaigns, prayer, and long-term sponsorship.

FUNDRAISERS

Help us share this project with your networks and organize campaigns to support land acquisition.

FOUNDATIONS AND GRANT-MAKERS

We welcome organizations interested in supporting child protection, education, poverty reduction, community development, and youth empowerment.

CORPORATE AND COMMUNITY PARTNERS

Companies, community organizations, and philanthropic groups can partner with us through financial support, construction materials, professional services, or other forms of assistance.

FRIENDS AND WELL-WISHERS

You can support this project individually or introduce ECCOU to someone who may be able to help.

10. EVERY CONTRIBUTION COUNTS

We recognize that not everyone can contribute enough to purchase land.

That is why we welcome support in different forms.

You can:

DONATE

FUNDRAISE

SPONSOR

PARTNER

SHARE THE CAMPAIGN

CONNECT US TO A POTENTIAL DONOR

PRAY FOR THE PROJECT

Sometimes one person may not be able to fund a project alone, but many people working together can turn a vision into reality.

11. OUR COMMITMENT TO ACCOUNTABILITY

ECCOU is committed to transparency and responsible management of all resources entrusted to us.

We will document funds received and project activities and provide appropriate updates to donors and partners.

For the land acquisition component, we are committed to ensuring that the process is properly documented and that the acquired property is secured for the intended child and youth development purpose.

12. OUR NEXT PRIORITY

Our immediate priority is clear:

SECURE LAND.

Once the required funding is secured, ECCOU will proceed with the necessary land acquisition process and begin planning for phased construction.

We are therefore looking for partners who can help us take this critical first step.

13. A PLACE TO CALL HOME

Every child deserves more than survival.

Every child deserves:

A safe place.

A bed.

A meal.

An opportunity to learn.

Someone to care.

Protection from harm.

Hope for tomorrow.

ECCOU wants to help make this possible for vulnerable children and youth who have very few alternatives.

Our vision is simple:

A Place to Call Home. A Place to Learn. A Place to Heal. A Place to Grow.

14. CALL TO ACTION

We invite you to become part of this journey.

If you are a donor, fundraiser, church, foundation, organization, company, friend, or well-wisher, we need you.

Help us acquire the land.

Help us build the home.

Help us create a safe environment where vulnerable children can grow with dignity and hope.

You can help us by donating, fundraising, partnering, or sharing this campaign with someone who can help.

Together, we can transform an empty piece of land into a place filled with hope, care, education, protection, and opportunity.

16. CONCLUSION

ECCOU has demonstrated that limited resources do not have to stop us from caring for vulnerable children.

With the support we have received from local churches, individuals, friends, and well-wishers, we have already been able to provide educational materials and tuition assistance to some children.

But we know that much more needs to be done.

We have the vision.

We have the community.

We have the commitment.

What we urgently need is the partnership and financial support to secure the land.

We invite you to stand with ECCOU and help us turn “A Place to Call Home” from a vision into a reality.

Together, we can build a safer and brighter future for vulnerable children and youth.
