2020 ended with fresh challenges for the plans for The Ideas Partnership's new centre in Fushe Kosove. We had hoped to break ground in December but with delays to getting our building permit, the start of work was postponed to after the New Year.

However, when residents of Fushe Kosove woke to floods in January, we realised that the construction lorries had had a lucky escape. Although our land had - thankfully - not flooded, the water level on the tracks leading to the site would have made them impassable by works vehicles and our foundations would no doubt have become waterlogged.

And while the bureaucratic procedures wore on, we were able to focus our support in January on the members of the community whose homes and supplies had been soaked, offering hygiene and food packages to 40 families.

Now that the waters have receded, we are ready to start building. The additional documentation requested by the municipality for our building permit has been submitted, and we're hopeful that work will be able to start this month. As Arijeta, a young women from the community who is one of our co-ordinators, says,

'The building of this new centre has huge significance for everyone in our neighbourhood as it will be a place for anyone in need. The children will be really proud. For the community's women and girls in particular, The Ideas Partnership's centre offers a second home where they feel safe and they find warmth and support. When they come to our centre they can learn new things about their rights and the knowledge that makes them independent.'

And although the postponement is frustrating for the long-held dream for a fit-for-purpose building to offer all that Arijeta describes, as the floodwaters rose we saw other things rising too. We have had wonderful support from Kosovo's business community - alongside the money given by you to build the centre, and the grants we've received, we have had donations in kind of the electrical work, bathroom tiles, the concrete, most of the windows, the heating and plumbing and the insulation. We are waiting to hear whether we'll be successful in finding donations for doors, plastering and the kitchen. Based on all the help we've had to date, we are hopeful that the only floods we'll be experiencing this spring will be a continuation of the deluge of support we've been so grateful for.

Earlier this year I visited the former home of possibly the greatest Albanian man of letters, Booker prize-winning author Ismail Kadare. His apartment is now a museum and our guide took us into the study there to show us a very special fireplace.

In Communist Albania an open fireplace in a city apartment was a forbidden luxury so Kadare had to undertake its building with the secret help of a lot of friends. Any time someone came to visit they were invited to bring with them just one heat-resistant brick, wrapped in newspaper so as not to arouse suspicion, When enough fire-proof blocks had been assembled to line a chimney and create a hearth, Kadare put them together. And on the first day that he lit his blazing, cheering fire, he invited everyone who had contributed to come and warm themselves beside it.

It's a vivid image that has stayed with me as we've been assembling our centre over these last months. On GlobalGiving alone we've received 67 separate donations to build our 'hearth'. We almost have enough now to start building,

As Hysni Hasani, our co-ordinator in Fushe Kosove, said to me this week, 'I feel so proud that all these people want to help my community. It feels amazing that some of them haven't even met us, but they are still ready to support.'

Following the tender process over the summer we've now signed a contract with the Pro Construction company and they are ready to break ground. This week we've had meetings with some of the largest building companies and suppliers in Kosovo and three of them have offered to donate concrete, gravel, tiles and more, These donations don't arrive singly wrapped in newspaper but in the same way as Kadare's guests who came together to make something amazing happen, we hope that each of you who's contributed to this dream will soon be warmed by what you've made possible!

Step by step we're coming toward a centre where great proffesionals will rise.

August is waiting for us with big treasures, the month which the building of the new centre will begin, and we are beyond exicted for this new beginning.

The concept-design of the new centre is now finalized, and sooner we'll be posting a tender for the building companies to apply so therefore we can choose the best one to start the building process, considering every little detail to make it functional and open for fun activites, in the longlasting memories of the children who will be attending further these years.

We are stepping with a great progress into this Winter, and can't wait to see the finished product of this very hard and passionate work for the community we work for, thanks to you.

The Ideas Partnership, with love!

"We stepped onto the bare earth with our right feet first - the way you step into a special place, and bring good luck."-Says Elizabeth!

And it couldn't be expressed in a better way the excitement for the new centre, that will become the place for new opportunities to offer community.

We come with great news as always because of your support. The land where this center of opportunites will take place is purchased in Neighborhood 28 of Fushe Kosovo and where our new, fit-for-purpose and flagship eco-friendly flagship will be built this year. We couldn't be happier!

Considering all these good news we also have another thing to add, and that is our next step further to this process. This includes the announcement of the tender to select the company which will be constructing, therefore when the long winter comes to end. And that's when the building will rise as the flowers rise in the Spring, offering education, activities and fun there where indeed was missing.

Always feeling grateful for all of our supporters, that are making this happen, and therefore motivating us to work harder to provide for others in need!

We rise by lifting others, and always by opening our horizon for new opportunities among the way!
