Executive Summary

For over 31 years, Diani Children’s Village (DCV) has provided a safe, loving, and nurturing home for abandoned, neglected, abused, and vulnerable children along the Kenyan coast. Guided by the belief that every child deserves an opportunity to grow in dignity, security, and hope, DCV continues to offer holistic care that addresses the physical, emotional, educational, and psychological needs of children.

In celebration of more than three decades of transforming lives, DCV launched “A Legacy of Hope”, a project dedicated to strengthening child protection systems, improving access to healthcare and mental health services, and ensuring quality education for every child under our care.

The project has a fundraising target of USD 20,000, and to date, generous support from 40 donors and 1 monthly donor has enabled the project to make meaningful progress. While much support has been received and deeply appreciated, USD 3,535 is still needed to fully achieve the project goals and sustain essential services.

The support received so far has enabled Diani Children’s Village to continue responding to the complex and evolving needs of vulnerable children. However, the operational demands of providing high-quality care have continued to rise, particularly due to the increasing number of infants and young children requiring specialized medical attention, therapeutic support, and intensive caregiving.

Background

Children entering Diani Children’s Village often come from situations of abandonment, neglect, abuse, family breakdown, or severe vulnerability. Many arrive with medical conditions, developmental delays, emotional trauma, or educational challenges that require individualized and long-term support.

Over the past year, several children have required specialized healthcare interventions, ongoing therapy, and regular medical follow-up. At the same time, educational costs have increased significantly, while the demand for highly trained caregivers and child protection services has continued to grow.

Providing comprehensive care requires more than meeting immediate needs—it demands sustained investment in health, education, emotional wellbeing, and a stable caregiving environment.

Progress and Achievements

Despite growing operational challenges, Diani Children’s Village has continued to provide quality care and support to every child entrusted to the organisation.

1. Medical and Therapeutic Care

A number of children have required specialized medical attention during this reporting period.

One notable case is Baby Isham, who was diagnosed with a congenital heart condition (a hole in the heart) following an echocardiogram examination. Baby Isham continues to receive regular monitoring and specialized medical follow-up to ensure the best possible outcomes.

Other children have benefited from:

• Routine medical care and health monitoring.

• Physiotherapy and therapeutic interventions.

• Specialized medical consultations.

• Nutritional support and supplementation.

• Mental health and psychosocial support.

These services have significantly contributed to improving children’s health, development, and overall wellbeing.

2. Education Support

Education remains one of the most powerful tools for breaking the cycle of poverty and creating opportunities for vulnerable children.

Project support has enabled DCV to continue providing:

• School fees payment.

• Learning materials and school supplies.

• Uniforms and educational resources.

• Examination fees.

• Support for children with special educational needs.

Every child deserves the opportunity to learn, dream, and build a brighter future, and DCV remains committed to ensuring that no child is left behind.

3. Strengthening Child Protection Systems

Protecting children remains at the heart of Diani Children’s Village’s mission.

Progress has been made through:

• Staff safeguarding training.

• Trauma-informed care approaches.

• Improved psychosocial support systems.

• Enhanced case management and child follow-up processes.

• Increased collaboration with social workers, counsellors, health professionals, and government agencies.

These efforts help ensure that children grow in an environment where they feel safe, valued, protected, and loved.

4. Caregiver Support and Staffing Needs

The presence of dedicated and compassionate caregivers is essential for the healthy development of children.

However, caring for infants and children with special medical or developmental needs requires additional time, specialized attention, and increased staffing levels.

Several babies currently under our care require:

• Round-the-clock supervision.

• Specialized feeding and nutritional support.

• Frequent medical appointments.

• Physiotherapy and therapeutic interventions.

• Individualized emotional care and developmental stimulation.

As a result, the need for additional caregivers and fair, sustainable staff support has become increasingly important.

Investing in caregivers means investing directly in the wellbeing of children. Consistent, trained, and emotionally supported caregivers provide the stability, love, and security that every child needs to thrive.

Current Challenges

While donor support has been invaluable and deeply appreciated, the cost of providing quality child care continues to rise.

Key challenges include:

• Increasing medical expenses for children requiring specialized treatment.

• Growing educational costs.

• Need for additional caregivers to support infants and children with complex needs.

• Rising operational costs, including food, utilities, transport, and child care supplies.

• Costs related to mental health and therapeutic services.

• Continuous staff training in safeguarding and trauma-informed care.

These challenges highlight the importance of sustained support to ensure that every child receives the care, protection, and opportunities they deserve.

Long-Term Impact

“A Legacy of Hope” is more than a fundraising initiative—it is an investment in the future of vulnerable children and stronger communities.

The project will contribute to:

• Improved health outcomes for children with medical needs.

• Increased access to quality education.

• Stronger child protection systems.

• Better mental health and emotional wellbeing.
