The European Food Banks Federation (FEBA) is a non-profit organization that unites Food Banks across Europe in the fight against food insecurity and waste. FEBA supports a network of over 30 country Food Banks, working to collect and redistribute surplus food to those in need. By partnering with food producers, retailers, and other stakeholders, FEBA helps divert edible food from waste, ensuring it reaches vulnerable communities across Europe.
In Europe, food insecurity remains a pressing challenge, with an estimated 7.6% of the population (including Central Asia) facing moderate to severe food insecurity. This translates to approximately 38 million people in the European Union alone who struggle to access enough nutritious food on a regular basis (FAO, 2024). At the same time, the issue of food waste is alarmingly high, with 131 kilograms of food per inhabitant wasted each year across Europe.
Funding FEBA's Holiday Campaign will support our efforts to address food insecurity include a robust network of food banks and charitable organizations. Currently, 12.8 million vulnerable individuals rely on food banks across 30 European countries for essential support. These food banks, managed by over 44,000 charitable organizations, distribute a total of 839,942 tons of food annually, primarily through a volunteer-driven network, with 94% of operations carried out by volunteers.
A successful holiday campaign could create a ripple effect that leads to sustained reductions in food insecurity, cultural shifts around food waste, stronger community bonds, policy changes, and long-term environmental and economic benefits. By addressing both food insecurity and food waste together, such a campaign could help build a more sustainable, equitable, and resilient European food system for the future.
