Sri Lanka is currently facing its worst economic crisis since its independence in 1948. The roots of the current crisis lie in the Covid-19 pandemic, which devasted country's lucrative tourism industry and sapped foreign exchange worker remittence. It has led to near depletion of foreign exchange reserves, shortages of essential supply of fuel, gas and medical supplies and soaring levels of inflation affecting basic commodities. These conditions triggered unprecident protests followed by political instability. Sri Lanka is also the first Asia-Pasific country in decades to defalut of foreign dept.
In the wake of these and other compounding crises, all Sri Lankans have had to tighten their budgets, and struggle over acquiring essentials. Communities across the country today struggle to feed their children on a daily basis. Food security has topped the list of priorities among the vulnerable. Therefore, as an emergency response initiative World Vision Lanka decided to provide mid day meals for preschool children across Sri Lanka.
As the first phase of the project, World Vision Lanka selected 476 children in Kandawalai Sri Lanka with the hope of providing a nutritious meal for 3 months. Project commenced on the 30th of May 2022 and please check out the progress report for the month of July attached herewith to see the impact we are making through your generous donations.
