At the request of the local authorities, the two schools of Zahana will now be able to be registered as structures "approved by the State". The rights and obligations for 2025 and beyond relating to this will be communicated to our schools at a later date.
This new status will allow students to align themselves with official exams in the name of their own school. They are no longer considered "free candidates" (candidats libres) that have to take their exams under the umbrella of another local public school, as was the case in the past decade. Zahana will follow the official curriculum.
Additionally, Zahana has the right to pursue its primary objectives. First anchoring our teachers and their curriculum in the reality and awareness of rural life. Second, teaching improvements of agro-livestock methods and techniques that will help students replace certain unsuccessful age-old practices inherited from their parents.
The new status and the challenges – “State approved School”
To accomplish that, Zahana will have to formulate and submit a request for the official recognition of its schools. A meeting with the local representatives of the Ministry of Education took place during Zahana's site visit on December 19, 2024.
Zahana will have to submit administrative information. In addition, Zahana has to provide a list of the teaching staff, the infrastructure and equipment at its disposal. We also need to prove that we create and environment conducive to the education of children.
Of course, everything required seems to be there already. But we need to keep in mind that after almost two decades of existence, the teachers need retraining, the buildings need renovations, the educational documents need to be completed and updated, plus the students' tables and benches need to be renovated. This need to be addressed regardless, if our schools are approved by the State.
