Santi's family does not have a bathroom. The nights and early mornings in the Popocatepetl Volcano area are very cold. Santi cannot have a warm bath before going to school and has to use an outhouse when going to the toilet. Help us build this families a bathroom (with sink, shower and toilet), a rainwater collection system, a solar water heater and a biodigestor for turning waste into compost.
San Pedro Tlalmimilulpan is a rural town of no more than 2000 inhabitants. It is located at the foot of the Popocatepetl volcano, very high up with an extreme weather. The town was badly stricken by the September 2017 earthquake. Santi's family lost their house. We helped them rebuild, with locally produced adobe, a large room and a kitchen. But they do not have a bathroom. They use an outhouse digged at the end of their plot and wash with cold water from a big container.
We plan to build them a family bathroom with locally produced adobe. A private space with a sink, a shower and a toilet. We will need a rainwater recollection system to harvest and filter the water and a solar water heater. A biodigestor will be placed at the edge of the plot to turn the waste into compost.
The biodigestor will be built at the edge of the plot. It will have the capacity to be connected to other bathrooms of 4 neighboring families. In this extreme weather, warm running water will have a big impact in this family's health. There won't be any need to dig a new hole every 6 months to establish an unsanitary and smelly outhouse.
