This project restores and empowers victims of injustices such as war, school dropout, forced marriage, rape/defilement and domestic violence. We provide them with free training in professions such as hairdressing, horticulture and nursery school education so that they can create their own income and lead free economically independent lives. Once they can earn their own income, they contribute to training others so that we can sustain this empowerment for hundreds more.
Uganda's school dropout rate averages 68% according to Save the Children. Most girls, who drop out are victims of forced early marriage & rape; yet demographic health surveys reveal that over 65% of married women are domestically bartered. These groups of victims (school dropouts, girls and bartered women) lack the power to counter such injustice. Most interventions rehabilitate-not empower; address effects-not perpetuated causes. This project will empower over 100 such victims in Uganda.
The project identifies victimized youths and women who receive counselling and training in practical skills. They are then either employed in businesses such as nursery schools, hair salons and horticultural gardens or supported to establish their own business. These income generating activities are initiated to occupy restored victims as partner employees; who finally earn an income that makes them less vulnerable to abuse and exploitation.
The project will enable at least 100 women & youths to create their own income and their work as partner employees will increase their living standards in the long term. Because those that are trained contribute to the training of others, the project will continue to empower hundreds more in the future. The effects of this project will multiply into a cycle of opportunity to help women and youths escape the cycle of poverty.
