Single mothers seeking refuge in Greece are facing a crisis. The recent closure of state-run apartments and the only camp in Athens, has left around 10000 people with vulnerabilities struggling to find shelter. Families have an especially hard time because the limited shelter options are already over-capacity and few accept children. Through this project, we will provide single mothers with safe housing, access to food, baby supplies, social services and support them to rebuild their lives.
Support for people seeking international protection in Greece has dwindled. Cuts to cash and food assistance and evictions are pushing many families to their limits. Every day, single mothers come to us asking for help finding accommodation so their children don't have to sleep outside. As winter approaches, they are increasingly vulnerable. By providing emergency shelter and holistic support for survival and integration, this project will support to those who have nowhere else to turn.
We have two rent-free apartments available to us for this project. However, we need to raise funds to cover the operating expenses, utilities, social workers, food support and related costs. While we are applying for grants to keep this project going over the long term, we are relying on this microproject to help us launch it quickly before winter sets in. The next few months will be when these mothers and children are the most vulnerable due to the cold weather.
Lighthouse Relief works to foster a humane, supportive environment where refugees can access opportunities and hope for the future. Beyond providing shelter, this project will connect the families with support that helps them regain their footing, connecting them to specialised services such as mental-health support, day-care and language classes.
