This project will provide more than 125 youth of Puerto Lopez the opportunity to be involved in one or more of the offered summer vacation courses at Clara Luna. Engaging youth during summer vacation is one of the easiest ways to create leaders in our community and learn how to work together in a team, all while working on something typically not offered during the school year such as journalism club, mural and art club, music club, and dance club.
Youth of Puerto Lopez severely lack opportunities for recreational activities thus leading to an increased substance abuse, teen pregnancy, and health problems at a very young age. This challenge is intensified during summer vacation, while kids are away from the schools.
Vacation courses at Clara Luna will provide an opportunity for youth to become involved with a club or activity during their summer vacation. We offer clubs in the following topics; journalism, art and murals, dance, music, yoga, and culture. These clubs will allow the youth to strengthen their leadership skills, learn how to work better together in a team, and most importantly give them a recreational activity to participate in during summer vacation.
There are currently around 100 youth and children involved in the clubs and activities at Clara Luna, decreasing the number of youth in Puerto Lopez involved with drugs and alcohol, teen pregnancy, and health problems (malnutrition or overweight). With this project, we hope to expand the youth and children that attend our clubs to affect at least 200 youth in the community.
