EYC's scholarship program helps young people to further their education in the face of poverty. One student named Chanta Bunthon has a dream to become a civil engineer and help to rebuild Cambodia. His mother died when he was young and his father works hard to support his family, but is unable to contribute to his son's dream. Bunthon has been accepted to university to study engineering, but $400 is what stands between him and starting his degree. There are 12 other students with the same issue.
Education levels throughout Cambodian society remain very low, and the families from which the scholarship students come from are trapped in poverty stemming from a lack of education. The country desperately needs an educated workforce to recover from the effects of war, but the cost of higher education is out of reach for many young Cambodians. A university degree provides young people with the opportunity to forge successful careers in the new, growing, Cambodian economy.
Our scholarship program helps young people to further their education in the face of poverty. By giving them a helping hand, students get valuable education at university and an opportunity to set themselves apart from their peers who stop education too soon. This project will help our students keep pace by paying their annual tuition fees.
Without continuing their studies after high school, students are left to take basic jobs, where they have a low salary and little chance of advancement or growth. Support from EYC's scholarship program allow them to compete for professional jobs and have greater earnings potential.
