Students excited about new School Uniforms!

By Alejandra Garcia | Executive Director

This fall, many generous individuals donated to our Back to School Uniform Campaign, which ensures that all our students aged 3 to 13 have access to school uniforms. With your support, we raised about $3,000 to buy two uniform tops for each student. This project benefits both current and future Yspaniola students.

We began this campaign at the request of teachers and parents. Teachers noticed that student attire can create distractions and reinforce unequal economic conditions. Many parents don't have the means to send their children to school in adequate clothing daily and struggle to abide by dress codes. Implementing school uniforms will minimize stress for parents and students as they prepare for class, allowing students to focus on learning. Uniforms will also facilitate a more egalitarian environment and give students a sense of unity and belonging in our classrooms.

The Yspaniola staff has selected and ordered our new uniforms! They voted on uniform colors and ultimately decided on cream and blue featuring the Yspaniola logo. Students were excited to try on a sample of the uniforms and could not wait to wear them. Each student will receive a uniform fit to their size.

We will soon provide each student with uniforms to start the new school year. When students arrive at class, we will hand out their clean uniform tops, which a member of our cleaning staff will regularly clean. This system ensures the uniforms stay in good condition throughout the school year. You will get an additional report with more pictures after all uniforms are delivered to us.

Uniforms will contribute to the overall accessibility and equity of our learning spaces. Uniforms also give students a sense of belonging, unity, and structure, all important tenets of the Yspaniola educational model. This is all a part of our larger goal to offer quality academic programs to underserved communities in the Dominican Republic. Our work is only possible due to the continued support of our donors.Thank you so much for supporting Yspaniola!
