Sustained access to safe drinking water is a huge issue in Makanya, Tanzania. The rainy season is followed by 4 dry summer months that lead families to venture far for water. Often, children cannot attend school because of drought that deteriorates health and burdens children with fetching water instead of staying in school. A micro project that funds the construction of a sustainable water harvesting tank next to the local school will lead to sustained access to 20,000 liters of water for child
The project will increase access to safe drinking water during the dry season in a community school in Northern Tanzania. By increasing access to safe drinking water, the project will solve many water related health obstacles that the young children face. Additionally, the project will reduce the burden of water fetching for many young children and allow them to focus on school.
The micro project will fund the construction of a sustainable water harvesting tank through Maji Block, a Tanzanian company that specializes in constructing water harvesting tanks. The company offers a tank that holds 20,000 liters of water for a one-time construction cost of $4,500. The tank will provide much needed access to stored rainwater for school children during 4 months of the dry season.
Access to water during the dry season will be highly improved for children in the area if a water-harvesting tank is constructed next to the school. Water is critical to human health and development so improving water access will drastically improve children's health. Additionally, safe water access leading to improved health will create an environment that is conducive for an improved education and a brighter future for many school children in Makanya.
