As hundreds of families find themselves homeless after the June 22 earthquake in Afghanistan, our team is providing essential supplies and aiding the relief efforts. We are doing this by clearing roads and rubble, providing 4x4 vehicles, water bowsers, and assisting with the movement of mechanical plant and emergency supplies. This includes food, bottled cooking gas, and cooking kits. We will continue to mobilize our resources to where they are needed most.
At 01.30am on 22nd June a devastating 5.9 magnitude earthquake struck central Afghanistan-focused on Paktika and Khost provinces. This is the deadliest earthquake to strike the country in two decades. Early estimates indicate 1,000 people have been killed and 1,500 injured, but these numbers will likely rise. Rescue efforts are being hampered by heavy rain and lack of access and local resources. In Gayan district, up to 200 were killed and 1,800 homes destroyed, about 70% of the district.
With our extensive logistics capacity, HALO will ensure help can reach those in need. We are clearing roads and rubble, providing 4x4 vehicles, water bowsers, and assisting with the movement of mechanical plant and emergency supplies. As hundreds of families find themselves homeless, our team is providing essential supplies, including food, bottled cooking gas, and cooking kits. We now have over 100 HALO staff on the ground providing emergency relief.
Both affected provinces have explosive contamination from Afghanistan's long history of conflict. HALO will supply mapping and data about dangerous areas to ensure families displaced by the earthquake are not at risk.
