Project Report | Aug 5, 2013
Thank you for your support of DLF's work with formerly incarcerated youth.

By Andrea Gorzell Hickey | Manager of Institutional Giving

Thank you for your support of the David Lynch Foundation’s at-risk youth outreach.

Because of your generosity, the David Lynch Foundation will begin teaching the Transcendental Meditation technique to students at New Horizons School this fall.  New Horizons School is a transitional school for formerly incarcerated students and DLF staff has been working closely with school faculty throughout the summer in preparation for school-wide program implementation.  To date, 18 faculty members at New Horizons School have learned the technique, and everyone is eager to bring meditation to the entire school population this September.

All of us at the David Lynch Foundation are thrilled to have the resources and opportunity to teach these formerly incarcerated youths this invaluable tool.  A new study published in the June 2013 issue of the journal Education (Vol. 133, No. 4), found that meditating students were less likely to dropout of school or enter prison and more likely to be accepted to post-secondary institutions.

Of the students at New Horizons School who will learn to meditate this coming school year because of the support of the David Lynch Foundation and generous individuals like you…

  • 2% self-identify as White or Caucasian,
  • 38% self-identify as Hispanic or Latino,
  • 60% self-identify as Black or African American,
  • 12% have limited English language proficiency,
  • 21% are diagnosed with a disability, and
  • 93% of students and their families live at or below the poverty line.

Again, thank you for your support and interest in the David Lynch Foundation's youth outreach.  We look forward to reporting more on DLF’s new partnership with New Horizons School when students begin learning the Transcendental Meditation technique this coming fall.
