A hygienic, affordable, usable solution for menstruation is a woman's fundamental need. A sanitary pad can be a small intervention but can go a long way to improving access to education and local jobs. This project not only addresses the well-being but also expands women's opportunities to be available for education or work. This project is a simple but meaningful solution that can inspire people in challenged communities to propel with their own work, their lives to a better future.
Through our interventions pertaining to the parent project 'Training 130 women youth health leaders in Gujarat', we experienced that more and more adolescent girls are adopting the use of sanitary pads. These girls share their learning back home and influence their family members and friends to adopt these practices. This ball-rolling effect has prompted us to appeal for support to make low-cost sanitary pads available to a larger number of girls on sustained bases.
This project tackles problems of both awareness & affordability. Taking place in 35 slums of Ahmedabad, awareness meetings will allow local adolescent girls to learn about the importance of menstrual health & hygiene, including sanitary pads. Two leaders will be chosen from each slum and will take part in a training session on health issues and business skills. They will be given stock of low-cost sanitary pads to promote and sell it to adolescent girls/women in their slums
2500 women or girls will be better informed about healthcare and hygiene. 2500 women or girls will access to affordable sanitary towels. Improved health of women due to above. Improvement in school attendance for girls. Awareness of health and sanitation practices will be transferred to daughters and granddaughters and all generations for the future. Youth leaders will generate income from sales of sanitary pads and other hygiene related products.
