Yessica has come a long way in her nursing studies and is now in the homestretch. This year she must do 9 months of internship in the rural areas and in the city. She will no longer be able to work part time to cover her expenses. By finishing her studies, Yessica will be able to work as a nurse and help sustain her grandmother and three younger siblings as well as contribute to the health and education of her family and that of her community.
Yessica's grandmother lives in a very precarious situation and has taken on the raising of Yessica and her three younger siblings upon the death of Yessica's mother. Yessica has always worked on the weekends to help with household and educational expenses. In order to graduate as a nurse, she must now do her internship including Saturdays and Sundays. She will have extra expenses of transportation to and from the rural areas, food and lodging, but will not be able to work.
With an allowance of $58 per month for one year, Yessica can finish her internship and fulfil the requirements for graduation. Working as a nurse, Yessica will be able to provide for herself and her three younger siblings and help sustain her grandmother. As a nurse she will also contribute to the health and well-being of her family and of her community.
Educating girls promotes many positive changes. Educated girls have children later and usually have fewer children. They put more importance on a good education for each child and are more aware of the importance of good health care for their children. Educated girls are more prepared to begin to break the cycle of poverty. They are better prepared to contribute to the development of their community and their country.
