Summary

The Surfer Girls of Cox's Bazaar are an extraordinary group of underprivileged young girls, aged 8-14, who used to spend their days selling trinkets on the beach but now challenge local stereotypes to train as surfers and life-guards while going to school. Help CriticaLink support these amazing girls by providing: 1) CPR & First Aid certification help with their lifeguard credentials 2) Self-defense workshops to keep them safe 3) Women's health workshops to keep them healthy

Challenge

The Surfer Girls of Bangladesh are a group of underprivileged young girls who face a lot of vulnerabilities trying to survive and thrive in Cox's Bazaar. This project will support their ability to make a living working as lifeguards, but also help them protect themselves and their health in an environment that is sometimes dangerous for young girls. We want to encourage these young women to pursue their dreams, their education, and their passion while keeping them safe.

Solution

This project aims to support the Surfer Girls by giving them internationally recognized certification in CPR and First-Aid by providing the CriticaLink First Responder training course (supported by the US Embassy in Bangladesh, Duke University EMS, and Tulane School of Medicine). In addition, we will conduct our CriticaLink Self-Defense workshop for Women (conducted by trained, black-belt karate experts), and a Women's Health Workshop with CriticaLink female doctor volunteers.

Long-Term Impact

Drowning is one of the leading causes of death in Bangladesh, and as a result, it is important to educate people in recognizing and treating drowning victims. By training the Surfer Girls as First Responders, we are able to save lives in line with our mission, while also providing an opportunity for young women to be gainfully employed. By training them in self-defense and women's health, we also provide them with a chance to stay safe while serving their community and earning a living.
