Challenge

Menstruation is a biological process in women, however, taken as a big social taboo in Nepal. In Nepal, women are bound with social restrictions such as not touching temples, kitchen or publicly discussing about the issue. Women in rural Nepal still use cloth pieces during periods and this is due to lack of menstrual hygiene awareness and difficult access of sanitary pads in rural places.Teenage girls and women have no knowledge regarding the menstrual process and reproductive hygiene as well.

Solution

This project will address two major problem regarding menstruation. 1) Provide low cost sanitary napkins in rural schools and village 2) Distribute "menstrupedia" an integrative book on information about menstruation. This will help to enhance their access and promote the use of sanitary napkin and also enhance their knowledge about menstrual process which will ultimately lead to minimization of social restrictions. To ensure the proper disposal, dustbins will also be distributed.

Long-Term Impact

The project will help to bring a long term impact in the lives of rural girls, both biologically and socially. The use of sanitary napkins will help them to remain healthy, free from infections, more confident and positive. Also, the enhanced knowledge on menstruation will enlighten them against the malpractices during menstruation. In the long term, women will be more aware about their reproductive health, enjoy their reproductive rights properly and rise from social domination.
