Ann Foundation (AF) is aiming to support 150 students in Kenya at the Fortune Learners Center (FLC), an established charity that has been working with marginalized youth since 2013. Proceeds will be used to provide FLC with the Information Technology (IT) equipment and essentials necessary to execute AF literacy program for youth at the center. We hope to start the classes as soon as we have the necessary funds to setup infrastructure.
In Kenya, it is estimated that there are approximately 3.6 million children under the age of 18 who have been orphaned or who are vulnerable. According to UNICEF, almost 1.13 million children of primary school age (6 to 13 years old) are out of school, according to an Out-of-School Children Initiative study conducted in Kenya in 2020. The situation worsened due to the impact of COVID-19 related school closures, followed by drought in many of the focus counties.
The Fortune Learning Center (FLC) works to enrich lives of orphans and vulnerable children from the slums of Nairobi and Kendu Bay area through education. Ann Foundation is teaming up with FLC to provide online literacy classes to about 150 students that are without access to electricity and technology. The collected funds will be used to provide the center with a laptop (~$350); projector (~$250); and internet access (~$50).
Ann Foundation (AF) goal is to ensure the center can continue to provide students with the most advanced skills and learning platform that promotes lifelong learning to break the cycle of poverty. AF has a long history of supporting similar educational centers and needs, in India and countries on the African continent, by delivering technological resources and literacy program, specifically throughout the Covid-19 pandemic.
