For just $250 a year, you can make sure that 13-year old Agatha has everything she needs for the academic year! Agatha is a Primary 6 student at Nyaka Primary School. At home, she helps her family fetch water; at school, she loves studying English.
Uganda has the highest number of HIV/AIDS orphans in the world, and many of them live in impoverished circumstances. Families usually send the boys to school, opting to keep the girls at home to work, saving money on school fees. Without an education, the girls will continue to be ensnared by the cycle of poverty. Although all of our students, including Agatha are all HIV/AIDS orphans living in similar circumstances, they have been given the opportunity to receive free high-quality education.
When you support Agatha, you are ensuring that she will continue to have access to free high-quality education, as well as nutritious school meals and clean water. Many studies show a connection between HIV/AIDS prevention and education, so it is imperative that our students receive as much schooling as possible. Agatha, like our other students, understands that education is her key to better her life, her family, and her community! She works hard every day to achieve her goals.
Having an education will allow our female students to break out of the cycle of poverty, and create opportunities for themselves. They will be less vulnerable to human trafficking, or getting lured into the city for low-wage jobs, because they have other options to pursue. They will be less susceptible to diseases, especially HIV/AIDS, and less prone to early pregnancy. Instead, they will have the chance to take advantage of the opportunities they have, and work towards a university education.
