Minority populations - particularly girls, non-English speakers and the economically disadvantaged - are poorly represented in STEM fields. Studies show inequalities and gaps in STEM learning begin early in a child's life, making it difficult to catch up with their more advantaged peers. By introducing and reinforcing STEM concepts early we can help turn this around through parent trainings, our unique STEM book collection, extension activities and connections to local libraries.
This project will ensure Kindergarten and 1st Grade students and their families participate in Raising A Reader's validated STEM literacy program. You will help provide resources to classrooms while offering a means for parents to build their child's interest in STEM. Over the course of the program, children will be introduced to more than 100 books, including special STEM-themed books, as well as STEM activities that parents and children can enjoy together to promote a love of learning.
By supporting this project you will help to provide a solid foundation of STEM and early literacy for children across the US that will result in more economically disadvantaged children, girls, English language learners and minority populations represented in STEM related fields in years to come.
