MULIA's programs support vulnerable youth and adults in our community. We're located off the grid without access to electricity. We purchased a base solar energy system and need to expand its capabilities to meet our needs, especially regarding our planned computer lab and our ability to provide evening classes. We can't afford a piano for our music program, so rely on an electric keyboard. We're excited to teach our community about the science, importance, and feasibility of sustainable energy.
We recently raised the funds to purchase a base system, but it is only enough to charge a limited number of devices. Once they run out of power we can't recharge them because we need to save power for nighttime security lights. We could hold paid computer classes to subsidize our free programs for those who can't afford to pay. We would like to fundraiser through commissions in selling solar panels to households that can afford them, but we don't yet have a functioning model to show customers.
We could hold classes at night and teach computer skills. With internet access we can gain knowledge through web research, connect to others around the world through Zoom and email, and take advantage of offers from international volunteers to provide online tutoring. We won't have ongoing power bills to drain our limited budget. We can hold paid computer classes (which helps cover the cost of our free programs for those who can't afford to pay) and show the community how well solar power works.
MULIA serves over 600 individuals, many who lack access to water, nutrition, electricity, and education. We aim to empower Uganda's vulnerable youth by helping them discover and pursue their dreams of the future, regardless of the circumstances of their pasts. Having a source of reliable electricity that is environmentally and financially sustainable, will allow us expand the range of programs we provide, increase the number of individuals we can assist, and foster international connections.
