Send DC Students to Study Abroad in Tanzania II

Summary

We have raised a significant amount of the money necessary to take several DC youth and an accompanying parent to study abroad in Tanzania this summer! We need to acquire an additional $7000 to cover hotel fees and excursions. Your donation will provide an enriching life experience for several of our students who have initiated relationships with student in Arusha, Tanzania through email and Skype. Students are identifying shared issues in their communities and viable solutions.

Challenge

Our world is becoming increasingly more globalized and is presenting new educational demands for our children. Students must be prepared to participate in a more advanced economy and develop the leadership skills necessary to address a number of global issues including disease prevention and climate change all while learning habits of success. Additionally they must be able to collaborate with people of different ethnic, cultural, and religious backgrounds in order to address these problems.

Solution

Our program equips students with an understanding of their personal and collective ability to transform their lives and the lives of others. They will develop the skills to become globally competent world citizens as outlined in the Asia Society's definition of the term. According to the organization, "Global competence refers to the acquisition of in-depth knowledge and understanding of international issues, and appreciation of and ability to learn and work with people from diverse backgrounds.

Long-Term Impact

Studies show that students who travel abroad are more likely to graduate from high school and pursue degrees in higher education. These students also experience academic success throughout the duration of their studies. Students who have traveled with Meda Ase in the past are now top performing students and leaders in their schools. They are selected to represent the student body as ambassadors and typically volunteer to present their study abroad experience to peers and the community.
