School Meals for 231 Students in Sierra Leone

A microproject by Develop Africa, Inc.
School Meals for 231 Students in Sierra Leone

Summary

Most children in Bathurst come to school with an empty stomach. This makes it hard for them to focus on their lessons. A daily school meal can mean not only better nutrition and health but also increased access to and achievement in education. Additionally, it's a strong incentive for kids to consistently attend school. This project will provide a nutritious lunch for the 231 children attending the Rural Education Committee School Bathurst (Pre-School & Primary School)

Challenge

The primary school is one of many deprived schools situated in the mountain rural district, a suburb of Freetown, Sierra Leone. It is the only school in the Bathurst community. Most of the students come from very poor families who are unable to provide consistent, meals, much less nutritional meals, to their children. The hungry children often have a difficult time concentrating in class.

Solution

Funds from this project will provide meals for 231 school children. In-school nutrition can enable children from food-insecure homes to attend school with a healthy lunch every day. This will improve the students' nutritional status and improve their overall health and cognitive development. This will help boost their academic performance and reduce dropout rates.

Long-Term Impact

The project is an effective long-term investment that will help provide quality educational opportunities for more youths and young adults so that they can rise above poverty and become better decision makers. The principal economic advantage of this education project is that it will produce people who are capable of making a greater contribution to the national economy. These future leaders' incremental earnings represent the added social output generated by investment in their education.
