Save 50 Dogs with Maggot Wounds in Indian Monsoon

A microproject by Dharamsala Animal Rescue
Save 50 Dogs with Maggot Wounds in Indian Monsoon

Summary

Every monsoon the street dogs suffer. They do not have the comfort of shelter from the rains that come. A small scratch can become an open maggot infested wound leading to a slow painful death. Once rescued, it can take up to 2 months for a wound like this to heal, and constant cleaning bandage changing is needed to keep the wounds dry. We rescue, on average, 50 such cases during the monsoon season - from mid-June to Mid September. Estimated costs: $200 per patient to go from hurt to healed.

Challenge

At DAR we are working to reduce the human/street dog conflict by stabilizing the street dog population through spay/neuter programs and ending rabies deaths in humans through mass rabies vaccination, education and adoption. But until there are no more street dogs, we will continue to have to rescue dogs in need. By fundraising a lump sum to care for the estimated amount of dogs needing treatment, we can spend our time on saving them instead of asking for funds after they are rescued.

Solution

By having the funding in advance, we can prepare. We can procure the medicine, supplies, food, cages, blankets, etc needed for the estimated 50 maggot wound rescues.

Long-Term Impact

Each and and every rescue that comes into our clinic is sterilized and vaccinated to help stabilize the local street dog population and to eradicate rabies. In addition, you are saving the lives of these dogs that would otherwise have no hope. You are literally saving lives.
