Just Existing in Life

By Ebele I Chukwuka (Mrs) | Project Leader

Life, they say, is full of ups and downs but perhaps, not with the Widow Storm Victim and her two grandchildren. C4HDI together with other local authorities frantically try to see them live rather than see them just existing.
With the miserly burial of her husband at the peak of their helplessness, I lack word to describe the pains and cries she displayed especially on the day of the burial of her husband. C4HDI staff and volunteers devised a measure to save a situation where she severally threatened to end her life which was clearly understandable, losing her husband, losing her house and losing all her lifetime property, as we held her back applying minimal force to deter her. People were crying for her situation amidst our efforts.

After we succeeded in saving the situation, it lingered that she and her grandchildren didn't still have presentable clothes to wear for the yuletide, after the burial. We bought clothes, some little food stuff and drinking water for them. Every morning, we call to know how it has been with her the previous day. On the Christmas day, C4HDI team journeyed to spend some time with her. We helped her cook some food, spent time with the grandchildren, taught them some songs of carol. A member of our team surprised all when she opened her bag and brought out about four clothes. She gave two to the victim and one each for the two grandchildren.

When we had wined and dined with them, it was time for us to go. Before we set out for our journey back home, A member of C4HDI staff was appointed to say some prayers for the them. And after the prayers, he pulled another surprise by putting his hand into his pocket and gave them some money, a personal donation to them. Observing the situation, one of us declared that they were shut and overwhelmed with surprises. But my own observation was that the victim felt at home with us. She seemed to be saying that we should stay over and continue our being a shelter to them. We discussed at length with her as we gave her hope that all is not lost. She wished to say this, "please stay back here with us", but that's my observation.
Everyone of us gave a word or two of consolation to her and her grandchildren. The one that captured my interest was from a colleague who told them that the world is full of kind people. That at the appointed time soon, they shall savour the help of kindness. He further told them the story of GlobalGiving and the help they offered and continuing offering to them. At the mention of this; the Widow Storm Victim broke down in tears, stressing that her help came all the way from USA, overseas, thousands of miles away from her home. A people who have never met me physically could donate for my survival", she muttered as she cried.
She sent well wishes to all the people that had donated towards her upkeep especially the ones who did through GlobalGiving.
They had been touched. More is kindly expected.
Thanks.
