The community of San Javier, Baja California Sur would like to proudly report that due to your support after Hurricane Odile, their Community Cultural Center is again open! The community was thrilled to see the outpouring of international support they received to rebuild their Cultural Center, which for them is a symbol of unity and perseverance. A new pulse of energy and excitement emanates through the new walls as people from town and surrounding ranches came together to clean the space, hang photographs and display new products.
To capture the height of the tourist season, the community decided to temporarily put up woven bamboolike (Carrizo) walls, waiting for the slow months of the summer to completely remodel the space. As the physical space is rebuilt, the social organization surrounding the Cultural Center is also strengthening. A new community board has been elected and the board has hired a new young woman from San Javier to oversee management of the center. This spring, Living Roots will be working with the community on an ongoing workshop series surrounding sustainable tourism training, leadership and communication and valuation of their natural and cultural resources.
San Javier sends you a big abrazo from from the Sierra La Giganta for helping keep the doors of the Community Cultural Center open!
