Agatha hurricane left more than 40,000 victims. The effects have been mainly material, destroying houses, schools and public parks, but there is important damage that is often not taken into account, the psycho-emotional one. We want to be prepared for helping the communities to rebuild and reactivate their economy by basing us on the community healing and social economy pillars, that is why we want to share the post-disaster intervention model of Una mano para Oaxaca at the coast of Oaxaca.
Businesses and homes of more than 40,000 people and 26 coastal municipalities were affected by Hurricane Agatha, some of the communities have been blocked by flooding, and economic recovery will take time. This region is one of the most important in the State because is a tourist destination, but after the flood, the economy of the coastal communities is stopped by the structural damage that will take time to repair.
In 2018 and 2020 this region was affected by strong earthquakes and during that time we had the opportunity to generate networks with people to accompany them with a program that included economic reactivation, community healing and also cultural activities with children. We want to be present again. Our intervention model seeks to give people tools to get ahead once humanitarian aid is withdrawn but we need your support to make it possible.
We want to start with "solidarity baskets", locally produced food pantries, to reactivate community networks and the local economy. Subsequently, our program will offer community healing workshops for children and women. Finally, make a participatory diagnosis to identify which are the most representative livelihoods of each region, in order to reactivate the economy and allow people to self-manage their reconstruction.
