Summary

"Chhaupadi" is the malpractice prevailing in Nepal where women have to stay in the separate shed during their menstruation days. This project helps to raise awareness among women against the practice by highlighting the health consequences and adverse effect on lifestyle due to the practice. The program will be given to 50 individuals from 5 VDCs of Humla district, which belongs to the most rural part of Nepal. They will be provided with safe and hygienic menstrual practice knowledge.

Challenge

Women have been the victim of patriarchy and deep rooted social inequalities on the basis of gender in society since ancient age. In Nepal, women are bound to stay 4-5 nights at the cold shed faraway from their home during their menstruation cycle every month. They are considered impure and untouchable during their cycle. The shed they stay at are cold and unsanitary which causes several health risks to women. They are prone to many reproductive problems due to the widely practiced "Chaupadi"

Solution

The project will focus on providing awareness to the rural women informing them about SRHR issues, menstrual hygiene and consequences of malpractice of "chhaupadi" The program will be provided to indivduals from 5 different VDCs of Humla, which is the most backward and underdeveloped parts of Nepal.Program will focus on changing their mindset about "Chaupadi" by highlighting its adverse health risks and importance of safe and sanitary menstruation practice.

Long-Term Impact

In the long term, the villagers will be careful about their reproductive health and start avoiding the "Chhaupadi" practice. Currently, they lack proper knowledge on the importance of healthy practice during menstruation and are only focusing the religious importance on maintaining the practice. The program will make them conscious about the health and sanitation and get aware that with time, the society needs to change its practices for proper development.
