Susan is a single mother of 4 who struggling to abandon extreme poverty. After trying many jobs, Susan was finally getting back on her feet and making a good profit. Then, her son Godwill went sick and she spent all her money trying to save his life in different hospitals. Like Susan, many women in Cameroon live under constant threat of losing everything. This project will make sure 50 girls do not need to choose between their childrens' lives and their businesses ever again.
Most Cameroonians, especially the extreme poor, don't have access to health insurance or social security system. Complete misinformation aggravates the problem. The poor do not know how to go about the health system and often end up spending more than wealthier citizens. This has two major consequences: minor health conditions, never treated, become life threatening situations and small scale entrepreneurs see the savings of years wiped out when sickness attacks them or their families.
The Cameroonian Government in collaboration with international partners have developed a Mutual Health Program, which allows members to pay only up to 25% of their medical expenses. This product, which costs less than 10 dollars per person per year, is completely unknown to poor people. To some, even this is too much to afford. This project bridges the gap. By registering for free 50 impoverished women and children while sensitizing massively the community on the benefits of the program.
This is mostly a knowledge gap, the program has been available but the poor hardly know about it. Being a very cheap product, the actions will result on registration of not only the 80 supported girls, but at least 200 of their neighbors. Many of the benefitting girls will go on to pay for this product themselves next year. Even if they never do, by paying their insurance for a year you will be securing the life of her children and the economic impact of hospital bills. You can be their net.
