Connecting to the World

By Ginna Brelsford | Executive Director

Your funding impacted three Afghan girls! They will take turns at the laptop learning computer skills in shifts. Thank you. The center opened in the fall and is continuing to operate even under severe winter conditions. 180 girls are enrolled in our courses and girls range in age from 5-6th graders to 11-12th graders.

"I've been waiting to touch the computer. Now that the center is open and I signed up, I am sitting with the other girls learning. Our generator doesn't work so well so I don't know if I will be able to connect with American girls so much but I can learn from the internet sometimes. And even my family knows how good it is to have me learning computers." 17 year-old student

With access to the Internet a seed has been planted. The more female students are able to access information and interact with each other and those from around the world, the greater commitment they will have to lead their own lives. They gain tangible, marketable work skills and learn about new opportunities.  Empowered in this way, they are better equipped to help improve the lives of their families, children, and communities – and impact the future of Afghanistan in a positive way.

"While I was studying with my friend, we thought of many ways we could help our community. Our center and technology have opened up other ways of viewing things. Maybe we needed that." Circles of friendship are built around spaces designed exclusively for women in Afghanistan. This has been true for a long while now since the rules governing female access to public space is so constricted. However, within those rules, by adding access to technology, interesting opportunities for engagement in the wider world are emerging.

40% of students in school in Afghanistan are girls today. Statistics don't exist for how many of those girls have access to computers. What we do know is that you have helped more girls gain access, thank you.
