We're heading outside of Chennai to expand our support and mentorship model for mothers of children with disability! The majority of our project expenses is comprised of direct cash and grant investments given to mothers of children with disabilities while they are enrolled in our program. This microproject ($5000) will fund the remainder of our implementation costs for up to 70 women: trainings and materials, health and parenting classes, outings and field trips, and medical care.
Greater need: Mothers of children with disabilities in rural areas of India receive even less support than mothers in urban areas. There are no inclusive schools, no therapy centers, and significantly less access to healthcare for these families. Priyam Global's next step is to head out into these areas and find these families, adapting our support model and inviting up to 70 mothers to graduate by the end of 2020.
We focus on four essential areas based on feedback from mothers: 1) developing skillsets to earn flexible income, 2) building practical knowledge and experiences to increase confidence, courage, and resilience; 3) developing friendships with other mothers to improve health and wellbeing, 4) completing a 16-session health and wellness education course that we designed. Families in the program also receive free medical screenings and care as needed while they are enrolled.
"My future has truly changed by this program: now I have the confidence to face problems. My past was a tragedy and my present was unhealthy, but now in the future I would like bring some changes not only through how I act but in my ability to stay stable and strong. My family, husband, and friends now give me more respect and support, they even ask my opinion for any new ideas in their life. This has made me feel like a happier person in this world." - Saranya, 2018 graduate
