Optimal Brain Education for Children at Risk

A microproject by Step for Bulgaria Foundation
Optimal Brain Education for Children at Risk

Summary

This project will improve the physical, cognitive, socio-emotional and language capabilities of children who experience various developmental challenges due to neurological and genetic conditions. We aim to empower at least 13 children through optimal brain learning based on the principles of neuroplasticity. Experienced practitioners in neural education will give an intensive series of 10 lessons to each child whose family cannot afford the full cost of this method.

Challenge

According to various sources, there are currently over 25 000 children with special needs in Bulgarian schools. Autistic kids in Bulgaria number up to 140 000, whereas kids with Cerebral Palsy number anywhere between 3000 and 20000. Children who face various learning challenges related to a neurological condition/ brain damage are mostly treated through traditional physiotherapy, speech therapy, ergotherapy. Yet, many parents don't see holistic improvement - physical, socio-emotional, cognitive.

Solution

Neuroscientists increasingly demonstrate that the human brain can change and grow new neural connections throughout a person's lifetime. The brain can learn and overcome immense limitations earlier in life (first 5-7 yrs) as it is developing very fast. In Bulgaria, we have had several visits by experienced neuroplasticity practitioners who work with kids with autism, cerebral palsy, ADHD, genetic conditions. Their parents have seen meaningful improvements compared to traditional therapies.

Long-Term Impact

We impact the holistic development - for life - of at least 13 children. We influence directly their brain - the command center of the body. The new neural connections formed as a result of the lessons impact the children's physical, socio-emotional, cognitive and verbal development as well as their overall health. In addition, the students acquire a sense of agency and independence - that experience their capacity to learn, change and be independent individuals long-term.
